Hi! And welcome to the Cultivating Abundant Life Podcast! I’m Kait Palmer, and I am passionate about helping women cultivate better lives physically, mentally, and emotionally. 

Last week I talked about emotions–what they are, how they affect our bodies, and how essential oils can physically help us release those emotions. We also learned how to release four emotions–anger, fear, sadness, and joy–and the affirmations to accompany them.  If you haven’t listened to that episode yet I highly recommend you go back and listen to that one first!

Before we dive into today’s topic on identifying emotions, I want to talk about a Young Living product I’ve been ESPECIALLY thankful for this week!

I mean–awesome for my technique and form but again, I could hardly move the next morning! I know people who take this on a daily basis and have a lot of success with it. For my family right now, we take it on an as-needed basis. When my husband has done a tough mountain bike course it sends him rummaging through our supplements looking for AgilEase! As my body is getting older–I’m 37 folks but also the healthiest I’ve ever been–I find my recovery time is a bit longer than it used to be. Combine that with learning new skills in boxing or pushing further mileage on runs, and I am very, very thankful for AgilEase!

Let’s talk a little more about identifying emotions. 

One easy method is just to look at a list of emotions and see which ones resonate. We use a medical device in our family called the Zyto Scan. This uses galvanized skin response (or GSR) to basically ask your body a question and read the answer. It looks for oils or supplements that will bring your body into balance. I know, I was a total skeptic at first, but after a few scans I saw right away it couldn’t be just a chance it was pulling up exactly what I needed! Young Living has nearly 200 oils and it would pinpoint exactly what I needed! If there is anything I’ve learned in the last nine years it’s to trust the scan!

So back to emotions–when you combine a scan with Carolyn L. Mein’s book Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils, it can be mind-blowing. Often there are more than one emotion listed with each oil, and in that case I let the person being scanned read through the list…more often than not a specific emotion really jumps out at them as being true.

You can use that book in reverse as well. You can look up by emotion to see what oils you need to release that. Like we talked about in the last podcast, Purification can release anger, sandalwood is great at releasing Fear, lemon or orange help to release Sadness, and Joy is great for…you guessed it…JOY!

Another list I really like to use is that from the book How We Love and How We Love Our Kids– both by Milan & Kay Yerkovich. They have a list called “Soul Words,” that break feelings down into categories, and then give more descriptive words of those categories. Their categories are: happy, loving, high energy, amazed, anxious, confident, peaceful, afraid, traumatized, angry, low energy, alone, sad, betrayed, confused, and ashamed. For the entire list you can check out the show notes for a link to their website and download. I remember for a while we had this list up on our refrigerator so it was easy access for my oldest to browse through looking for the right word to describe how she was feeling! I think it might be time to do that again…

For younger kids they break down feelings into mad, sad, afraid, and happy–basically the four emotions we talked about in the last episode!

However complex or simple you decide to go, find the words that adequately describe the root of what you are feeling. Sometimes writing out words that resonate can help you decide the best description. Words are powerful, and so is giving a name to something.

We’re going to learn another way to use essential oils to release emotions today. This is called the Aroma Freedom Technique, or AFT, and it was developed by Dr. Benjamin Perkus. 

Again–there’s no wrong way to oil! Please don’t get overly hung up in this or that method or if you forget a step. Just mindfully being aware of emotions and imagining yourself releasing them while smelling an essential oil is amazing! Again, if you missed how essential oils help your body actually release emotions, go back and listen to Episode 4!

Aroma Freedom Technique includes 12 steps, and I highly recommend purchasing this book so you have it as a reference as you work through these! I’m giving you a brief overview and Dr. Perkus includes a short chapter on each of these twelve steps and covers it in much more detail than I will here. Once you do it a few times you can work through them fairly quickly…just like when you’re learning anything give yourself time and be patient with yourself. 

  1. Step one is setting your intention. This is more than just releasing emotions, it is to release emotions so that your intentions can be fulfilled. Dr. Perkus credits a friend with saying, “Before you can get what you want, you have to know what you want.” So, what do you want? What would you do if money was no object? What would you do if you knew you could not fail? What is your heart’s desire? What are the talents, gifts, and abilities that are unique to you? What does the world need that you can offer? You can have a set intention that you work on repeatedly, or you can have small intentions like things you want to accomplish in a day. And make this intention specific. So instead of–I want to feel peaceful today, maybe make it more specific to–I want to feel peaceful when my kids are losing their ever-loving-minds today. Anyone with me on this?!

    I’m going to give some of the examples from the book, and notice that they’re written as if they’re already occurring.

    I am in a loving and supportive relationship.
    I do what I need to do (eat well, exercise, go to sleep at a decent hour) to support vibrant health.
    I interact with my kids today with love and patience.
    I have a job doing ______ and paying ______ per year, starting on ____(a specific date)

    Your intentions need to be something you really want, something that is rational, something that excites you, and something that gets you in motion.

    The recommended oils to use during this first step are Valor, Grounding, Clarity, or Inspiration blends. Put a few drops in your hands, rub together, cup your hands over your nose and inhale deeply. We call this the “scent tent” over your nose. Breathe in deeply until you feel your body beginning to relax.
  2. Say the intention out loud and notice the first negative thought that automatically comes up–the one that tells you why this can’t happen. You might hear a thought like “You’ve tried that before and it didn’t work!” Or maybe you have a memory or an image of a time you failed or were humiliated. Now it may happen that after listening for a minute you hear no objections–you are fully aligned with your intention! Buuuut I’m guessing if you’re like me you have a ton of excuses that will pop in your head! Often these negative thoughts are ones you’ve thought so often over the years that they are engraved in your mind like a river cutting deeper into the banks. Dr. Caroline Leaf talks a lot about taking these negative thoughts captive and detoxing your brain–I’ll leave that to you to explore but you can check out her books or her podcast “Cleaning Up The Mental Mess.”

  3. Identify how you feel when you think about the negative thoughts. Dr. Perkus writes, “This is the most important step in accessing and releasing the energy that has been holding you back. Many people fail by neglecting this step.”
    If the message you hear is “You’ve tried and failed,” maybe you feel hopeless, ashamed, or sad. If it’s a memory where you were humiliated maybe you feel nervous that could be repeated. This is where that identifying emotions part comes in handy–work on narrowing that feeling down to a single word. At this point you need to make a choice. You can avoid the negative feelings through lots of different distraction methods—you have to go to the bathroom, you need a snack, your kids need to be checked on…or you can courageously allow yourself to feel the pain you’ve been carrying, identify where it is coming from, and reach resolution at the other end of this process.
  4. Notice where you feel this negative feeling in your body. Think about the feeling of grief, and that heaviness in your heart area. Or the tightening of your belly when you’re afraid. Or the tension in your shoulders when you’re angry. These aren’t pleasant feelings so it’s normal to avoid them…but just sit with it for a moment and let it pass through you like a wave.
  5. Drift to an earlier time, it could be recently or long ago, when you felt the same way. Find a “snapshot” of that time. This is called the feeling bridge. Our  memories are linked by similarities, and your current feeling of anger is linked and built upon all of the other times you’ve been angry. Remember in the last podcast we talked about expressive emotions that happen in the moment and reactive emotions that are built on things from the past? This is that same concept. So think of an earlier snapshot of this same feeling.
  6. Smell Essential Oils. OOoooooh we’re getting to the good part! Close your eyes. Focus on the snapshot, the feeling, the negative thought, and the bodily sensation while smelling an essential oil. Dr. Perkus includes a specific blend called the Memory Release Mixture which is a blend of Stress Away, Frankincense, and Lavender, or you can use Release or Inner Child. Personally I think you can also use the essential oil associated with that emotion found in Carolyn L. Mein’s book Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils.
    Doing this will allow the whole memory complex to shift. It’s important to do the prep first–if you need to edit a file on your computer you have to pull up the right file on your screen to edit it, right? When you smell the essential oil, it can feel like that negative emotion is washing away. Dr. Perkus says “Smelling the oil disrupts the memory complex itself. The oil stimulates a new feeling, which in a sense, displaces the previously identified feeling.”
  7. Notice the Changes. Allow whatever feelings that surface to just pass through you as you smell the oil. Ride the wave of emotion if it gets intense. See what happens to the image and how you feel in your body. If the feeling intensifies, keep smelling the oil and ride the wave. You may even find that this memory can trigger a different unpleasant memory–the healing process is like an ogre. And onions. They have layers that when you peel back one there might be another. If another new emotion emerges it’s healthy to talk about it or journal about it to explore and describe it. Find that spot in your body where you feel that new emotion emerge.  You can smell the oil again and repeat the process–in this case try switching up an oil.
  8. Notice new beliefs starting to emerge. Find the “light” breaking through the memory. Do you get any new creative ideas? When a person is smelling an essential oil and focusing on a memory, usually that emotional charge decreases. Even in everyday uses, smelling Stress Away while in the car with crazy kids can lower that emotional charge, right? As the negative memory is fading a new belief may emerge. You may even look at the memory in a new way. I love this line he writes, “The story we tell about ourselves, how we weave the memories of our lives together into a coherent whole, is the very essence of our self-esteem and self-image.” As you process emotions you want to be actively looking for a positive belief to emerge. Let’s take blowing up at your kids in anger as an example. You may feel ashamed by your behavior. If you’re a mama who hasn’t blown up at some point then I doubt you are human! And even if we apologize and seek forgiveness from our kids, we still may be left with that feeling of shame. As we work to release that emotion, a new view of the situation may be that you accept what happened and can let go of it. You forgive yourself for the outburst. Learning from this experience, you may look at what led up to the blow up and how to mitigate those situations in the future. And you may be appreciative of the forgiveness of your kids, and know that despite the negative event your kids got to see you as an example of humility. That’s a lot of positive things that can come from one negative event!
  9. Revisiting Your Intention. Read your original intention and rate it on a scale of 0-10 based on how likely it seems that it will manifest. If the number is less than 7-8, you may return to step 2 and identify additional negative thoughts. The original goal of this was to manifest that intention, right? So repeat this process with your intention and listen to what you hear. If you need to go back and release another layer of negative emotion go ahead and do that, and check back with your intention. If it’s not a 7-8 the second or third time around you may know there need to be action steps towards achieving your intention, like applying to a school, hiring a virtual assistant, or filling out an application.
  10. Create a new affirmation that expresses the new, positive belief and attitude you wish to instill. Now you are feeling better about your intentions, you need to anchor this in a new reality. The purpose of repeating this affirmation is to program your subconscious mind. They give your mind direction, and so when we create them in a healthy and balanced state of mind they can help override when temporary feelings want to sway us differently. You also want your affirmation to focus on the positive–like “I respond with love and patience to my kids today,” rather than the negative like “I won’t yell at my kids today.” There is so much power in our words–go do an internet search for Hidden Messages in Water –a book by Masaro Emoto. You can see how saying different words–no matter the language!–creates different ice crystals! That’s a really fun rabbit hole to go down! But back to Aroma Freedom Technique!
  11. Anchoring your new reality. Smell the blends Believe or Transformation. Repeat the affirmation for two minutes, with a confidence, morning and night, while standing in a power posture. So research has shown that odor-conditioning can affect motivation.

    Just like the smell of coffee can make you feel ready for the day, or popcorn makes you want to watch a movie, associating a smell with your affirmation will anchor it in your brain. So just like an emotion can have an affect on your body–we talked about shoulders tensing in frustration–it works in reverse as well. Standing in a power pose–open expansive poses like the stance of Peter Pan with feet spread, chest out, and hands on hips–can actually increase your testosterone and decrease your cortisol!

    Another pose is similar–feet planted wide, chest out, and arms out to the side. Standing in a post like this primes both your mind and body. Combine this with your affirmation and oil and you are setting yourself up for a very successful day! Say this affirmation with confidence for two minutes in the morning and evening, while smelling the oil and standing in your power pose. And don’t just do it for one day. If this is an intention you are serious about, repeat this programming your subconscious mind for several days in a row!
  12. Putting it all into action. Make a plan and take action daily!  So all of this intention and clearing negative emotions and reprogramming your brain is AWESOME! …BUT…if you don’t actually take any action steps then what was the whole point? I mean, ok, other than you carrying around a toxic emotion load, but what about your intention?

    Try sitting quietly with it for a few moments after you say your intention and see what creative ideas might come about for fulfilling your intention. Get your ideas down, then sort through and see which of those you can do today. Now is the time to put in the work. As you progress, if you notice more negative thoughts popping up, release those in the same manner that we just talked about.
    And sometimes releasing negative emotions connected to a dream may help us realize we wanted something different.

    This past year my girls began taking horseback riding lessons–something I had dreamed of as a kid! I even planned on taking lessons myself once they got going! We also did hours of mucking not only to offset the cost of lessons, but to show that if you want something you need to work for it. It had all the right components–exercise, horses, learning something new! They were so excited at first, and then…they sort of fizzled out. I didn’t want them to just quit at the first difficult lesson, so we hung in there for three months before realizing it just wasn’t for us. We like horses, but it’s not our main “thing.” What they did discover was Parkour, and every day they would ask how many days until their next Parkour class. Not once since we put away our paddock boots have they asked to go back to riding. Along the way I discovered boxing…and found I’d rather sweat it out punching a bag and getting smacked on the side of the head than clean the stall of a horse any day! 

And that is it. Twelve steps that took a bit of time to explain, but when exercised in real life go quite quickly. Pick up a copy of The Aroma Freedom Technique so you can read a bit deeper as you grow!

My name is Kait Palmer and I am passionate about helping people cultivate better lives physically, mentally, and emotionally. I have a lot of fun things I want to share with you with this podcast–from emotional release to earthing to caring for your pets to incorporating the enneagram with your oils to how to use oils in your garden!

A little bit about me–I’m a Southern California native, have been married to my husband Matt for 14 years, and we have three wild and unique girls who are 10, 7, and ALMOST 6. We live in beautiful Southern Oregon and love being outside in the forest, floating along the rivers, or taking day trips to the coast. My career background is in communication and marketing and I got to do some fun things like marketing at a megayacht builder in Seattle. I left that world when I had my first daughter, but continued working from home as an editor for a university. When I unexpectedly started earning more teaching people how to use essential oils and live a cleaner life, I left the “corporate” world for good. I’m a certified yoga teacher, and have been sharing and teaching classes on how to live a healthier life for the past nine years. 

As a mama, I take on the responsibility of researching the best health choices for my kids (and pets) and myself, and love sharing what I’ve learned with people who may not have the penchant for research that I do. 

Today though I wanted to share my personal story with you, to help you understand where I’m coming from and why I am so passionate about this. In July of 2006 I was hit with my first …..well I can’t exactly say but it was an intense head issue. If you’ve ever experienced this issue, you know how all-consuming and painful they can be! Since then, I’ve been on a health journey from conventional medicine to alternative health options. That’s why I originally completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training program–in hopes I would find relief! While it did help marginally, and I do love yoga, it was not the fix I was hoping. I spent the next 7 years trying just about everything you can imagine to help with them. At one point I remember telling my husband that if I found evidence that implanting an amethyst in my forehead would bring relief  I would do it! In my personal experience though, doctors failed me. I finally realized after 3 years that my issues were tied to my hormone cycle–none of my doctors ever made that connection. Twice a month for 4-7 days I’d be down unless I was on “conventional” treatments–which left me feeling dazed and slightly numb. 

I decided to learn about what affects hormones and–SURPRISE! Everything does! So I began to learn how to clean up my diet. I started with cutting out conventional dairy and mass market meat. I learned how to read labels for what I used on my body and in my home. The degree of intensity lessened but they still persisted, and when I was pregnant with our first daughter it was misery. I was in the ER or Urgent Care 4 times only to be told, “sorry we can’t do anything–you’re pregnant.” They would all ask if I had tried Tylenol (which didn’t even touch it), and at the last visit when the doctor asked that I yelled, “Have you tried YODELING?! Because THAT does about as much good!!!” I did repent later…

When my oldest daughter was about a year old we started thinking about the next baby, and I began to dread the pregnancy. The intensity of these issues had lessened as I cleaned up our diet and the products I used in our home, but I still was reliant on $300 worth of medication every month. Often just realizing I didn’t have my meds with me or I was running low was enough of a panic to trigger one. I felt enslaved to my body…worrying about planning a trip or activity only to have it thwarted by this. 

We were buying goats milk from a local farm and one day the farmer Jennifer, who knew what I struggled with, asked if I’d tried essential oils. During my yoga teacher training I went through a course that included a segment on aromatherapy, and had gone to Whole Foods with high hopes and bought a bunch of oils…that did nothing. I told her I had “tried oils,” but they didn’t work. These–she assured me–were different. I shrugged it off but she literally stuffed a little blue bottle into my purse as my arms were holding my toddler and urged me to try it.

I forgot about it. Honestly. Until the day my grandma moved to OK from AZ and we were unloading her moving truck. I could feel the aura and I desperately searched my purse for my meds…only to realize I had none. I did, however, come across a little blue labeled bottle. I had NO idea how to use it so I just put it where the tension was starting to appear, and kept unloading the truck in the sticky June heat. An hour later I realized…I was fine. For the first time EVER, something besides heavy meds had worked. 

That was in 2013 and as of this date, other than seeing my midwife during and post-pregnancies I’ve not needed to see a doctor. I never refilled my prescriptions. I have three kids and after learning about oils, we’ve had two medical issues that required a doctors’ visit in all that time. There’s absolutely a time and a place for western medicine–I’m not going to attempt to remove an appendix in my bedroom! But for the most part I’ve learned to deal with things at home. 

So I hope you can understand why I’m so passionate about essential oils and living clean. Oils weren’t the “magic bullet,” they were the final missing link that drastically changed my life. They first took care of the symptom, and then I learned to use other oils and supplements to take care of my endocrine system and address the root of the problem. When I don’t manage stress, am not conscious in how I eat, and skip out on exercising and sleeping well I notice an increase in my “issues.” However I’m no longer hiding in a dark room literally banging my head against the wall. The intensity is nowhere near where it used to be–my intensity level now is a 2-4 as opposed to a 7-10, and they don’t come during my cycles really anymore. 

Since we have big brother who cares SO MUCH about your health (as evidenced by the last two years, of course), I can’t say specific diagnoses we’ve dealt with naturally. I am not a doctor, just a woman sharing her experience. Consult with the healthcare authority of your choice and again–you always have a choice!

But know this–YOU are in charge of your health. No doctor on earth knows your body like YOU do. So put your big girl panties on and be responsible for doing the legwork to read labels and take care of your body so you can do the things you want to do for as long as you want to do them. If not for you, aren’t those you love worth doing it for? The three doctors, one naturopath, and one acupuncturist  I saw didn’t figure out…oh gee she gets really really bad problems twice a month? Maybe it’s hormonal?! Looking back it seems so obvious to me now…how did they all miss it? They just wrote prescriptions or suggested supplements…never any other suggestions. 

Think about this–if I can’t tell you that taking Vitamin *Dee*  is beneficial for your immune system, just imagine all the nuggets of truth I can’t say on here about essential oils! It’s like if someone asked me everything there was to do at Disneyland, and all I could say was, “Disneyland is an entertainment park.” I’d be leaving out all of the fun and magic and food and experiences, right? So I’m hoping that in these podcasts you read between the lines, and maybe dig a little deeper into what these liquid natural gifts have peer-reviewed and published studies showing they can do. Often you’ll hear me share HOW I use an oil, but maybe not WHY I use it there or in that manner. 

I am a Young LIving Brand Partner. I swore I’d NEVER do something like this…I’m not a Mary Kay lady and certainly not a sales person! But when something changes your life so drastically you tell everyone about it, it sort of came about organically. I’ll celebrate 9 years with this awesome company in June, and really do admire their whole process. I’ve been to the St. Maries farm in Idaho and the farm in Mona, Utah. I’ve gotten to harvest blue yarrow seeds, plant lavender, see the melissa seedlings in a giant greenhouse and get invited back by the farm manager to help with planting season (we were traveling otherwise–duh!). I’ve asked the workers how they like working there, and so far everyone I’ve talked to loves it. The farm in Ecuador has a two year waiting list to work there! They farm everything organically, they hand weed, they periodically test to determine when the best time to harvest it…I could and probably will do an entire podcast on their farming and distilling practices because I’m a total nerd who LOVES all of that! There are no fillers, nothing that was made in a lab, nothing synthetic. 

So let’s talk about the basic ways to use essential oils. There are different schools of thought when it comes to usage–English, French, German…they all have different takes on usage. We can do a whole podcast on that in the future, but the way I’ve learned and practice is the French Model. We use essential oils aromatically, topically, and internally. 

Aromatically is pretty straightforward–you smell it! It can be as simple as opening up a bottle and smelling it! You can diffuse it with a diffuser–we have 6 or 7 in our house! You can put a drop or two on a wooden clothespin and clip it to the air vent of your car, apply some to diffuser jewelry like leather or lava stones. My kids like to put a drop on their favorite stuffy or blanket to smell through the night. You can add some oils to water and witch hazel and mist your sheets with it (the witch hazel helps hold the scent on longer).

Next use is topically. Ya slather the stuff on! A few things to know first–some oils are “hot” oils. Cinnamon, clove, oregano, Thieves, peppermint, wintergreen, lemongrass–all of these can be a bit strong for some skin types to use neat, or undiluted. It doesn’t mean you’re having an “allergic reaction” to them, any more than rubbing cayenne pepper in your eyes and them watering is an allergic reaction. This really depends on your skin type, and what your body is going through. For me and my family personally, we rarely dilute essential oils when using them topically. However, when my kids are maybe fighting something off, I’ve noticed their skin will pink up a bit using one of these oils, and in that case we dilute with a carrier oil. A carrier oil is any fatty oil–coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, etc. This slows down the absorption of the oil into your skin. It doesn’t “weaken” the oil. 

So most recommend, “Start low and go slow.” Start with a drop (or less–often I’ll put my finger on the top of the bottle, tilt the bottle, and use that), and see how your skin does. If it gets a bit red or feels hot, you can add a carrier oil right to the top of it. Some people get all specific on one drop of essential oil to one tablespoon of carrier oil…yada yada…I’m sorry but I’m a mama of three and don’t have time for that! If I dilute at all, I just put some coconut oil in my palm, add a drop or two of essential oil, rub together and apply. If diluting is your thing whether for sensitive skin or to make those dollars stretch–totally a good reason by the way–you can premix the essential oils with a liquid oil like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil and put it in a roller ball.

Another thing to be aware of is that citrus oils, and blends that contain them, can make your skin photosensitive. Just like girls putting lemon juice in their hair back in highschool to lighten it, lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, or bergamot oil can make your skin much more sensitive to the sun. So if you’re using one of those oils topically, use it where the sun don’t shine!

Next safety item–don’t use essential oils in your eyes or ears. If, by chance, you do get oils in your eyes–and if you use a lot of oils it’s going to happen at some point–don’t try to flush it with water. Use a carrier oil around your orbital socket to draw the essential oil out. I’ve done this a number of times and other than my eyeball feeling cold with peppermint or a slight burning sensation with other oils, it’s not a big deal. 

For ears–do NOT give yourself a wet willy with the oils! If you are wanting to use oils for an ear issue, use the oil in the front and behind your ear, and down along your jawline.

Last way to use essential oils–internally. Now, a few years back the efF Dee Ay got their panties in a twist and said you can’t say you can smell that bottle of lemon and put a drop in your water as well…they have to be DIFFERENT things. So Young Living created the vitality line. If you see an oil bottle with a white label, all that means is it’s a great one to use internally. Is there ANY difference between lemon and lemon vitality? NOPE! Not a thing! But if I’m talking about adding oils to a capsule to swallow or add to a salad dressing, I’ll be saying “peppermint vitality” or black pepper vitality, just to make big brother happy. 

The way I love using essential oils internally is adding lemon vitality, lime vitality,or  jade lemon vitality to my water or sparkling water. For oils I know will support certain systems in my body, I’ll put vitality oils in a capsule and swallow. Some people like to add their vitality essential oils to the capsule and fill the rest up with a carrier oil, for me I’ve never actually found a need to do that but you do you. So if I’m wanting to love on my adrenal system I’ll fill the capsule with nutmeg vitality, endoflex vitality, and maybe some orange vitality for good measure. You can add a few drops of peppermint vitality to a batch of brownies, dip a toothpick in oregano vitality and stir it into your stew, or add a drop of Thieves vitality to a hot mug of black tea. When using vitality citrus oils make sure you use them in a glass, metal, or ceramic container. Citrus oils can eat petrochemicals like plastics and styrofoam, so if you want to do a fun experiment, blow up a balloon and let a drop of lemon oil fall on it…it’s almost like an instant diffuser when it pops and that oil disperses in the air!

I’m going to wrap up now with the way I’ll start future podcasts–talking about a Young Living product I’ve been especially thankful for this past week! I have to say this week I have found myself reaching for Progessence Plus.Its designed specifically for women and made with natural, bioidentical progesterone from wild yam to promote well-being and feelings of relaxation, harmony, and balance.It has sacred frankincense, copaiba, bergamot, cedarwood, peppermint, and clove essential oils in it. If you find your hormonal cycles influence your emotional state sometimes, give this one a try! This was one of the game changers for me in terms of getting my endocrine system to a much much better state. I’d say this is a great oil blend for anyone with ovaries! In fact, my 10 year old daughter, who has begun to develop, just scanned for this oil last week on a zyto scan–which is a medical device that uses galvanic skin response to determine oils and supplements that help bring your body into balance. I SO wish I had had something like this when I was in my teenage years! This isn’t going to force synthetic hormones on your body, the progesterone is bio-identical and your body takes what it needs and metabolizes and excretes the rest. Fancy talk for pee, y’all.

Dealing with Bad Air Quality

Here in Southern Oregon it feels like most of the summer has been smoky and we’ve been robbed of our days on the water and hikes–boo. We watch our air quality apps to gauge how much time we spend outside (if at all!) because we know breathing poor quality air can have long-lasting effects on our lungs and worsen chronic heart problems and possibly even affect your brain and fertility.

Despite being careful about time spent outdoors, we know here on the west coast we are still breathing in those particles at some point. Here are a few ways to help reduce the stress on your body and keep things operating optimally.

Run a HEPA air purifier (or two) in your home and make sure your home air filters are no more than 3 months old. If you live where it’s been smoky for a long time consider changing it more frequently. In 2020 during the Almeda Fire, all air purifiers were out of stock so people used box fans with a home air filter duct taped to the front of it. People I knew who did this said they could see all the dust and particles building up on the filter as proof it was working! We now keep an extra 2-4 filters on hand at all times. This might seem obvious, but still worth mentioning (and this pic is of the purifier we have and we love it).

Use your diffuser! Throw some Raven, R.C., Eucalyptus (any type!), Lavender, Ravintsara, or Pine into your diffuser and breathe deep. Myrtle and Roman chamomile are other great oils to diffuse (and smell so yummy!). Inhaling those oil molecules deep into your lungs can provide a lot of support.

We also like to rub Breathe Again, R.C., or Raven on our upper chest and backs or on the Vitaflex points for lungs on the soles of our feet.

*I do recommend turning your air purifier off while diffusing or using it in a different room–no need for those oils to go to waste!*

Take a detox bath. Regardless of wildfire smoke, our bodies are constantly accumulating toxins from our environment, products, food, and water. Regular detox baths help you body out.

I follow a detox bath recipe from a friend who is trained in lymphatic detox release:
4 cups Epsom Salts
4 cups Baking Soda
4 cups Hydrogen Peroxide

I add a few drops of lavender, cypress, or eucalyptus to the epsom salts before stirring them into the water. Soak for 20-30 minutes and drink a LOT of water–just go ahead a take a glass in there with you!

Why these ingredients?

Epsom Salt: It’s is rich in magnesium & sulfate, which are easily absorbed through the skin & aid in detoxification. It acts as a broad spectrum cleanser, clearing lymphatic congestion, removing some heavy metals and helping remove residual radiation & chemical exposures. Of course, it’s a smooth muscle relaxant & helps with muscle strain & pain. Epsom salts help replenish the body’s magnesium levels, which combats hypertension. It also induces sweating! They create a dense bathwater, and osmotic pressure pulls toxin-laden fluids out of the body.

Baking Soda: It’s a drawing agent that’s known for it’s cleansing abilities, and even has anti-fungal properties. It helps neutralize chemicals like chlorine, & increases mineral absorption. It also naturally alkaline, which aids in removing toxins. (ALL disease needs an acidic environment to live!)

Hydrogen Peroxide: Of all the ways to oxygenate the body, this is the easiest & cheapest. By cleansing & purifying our skin, our bodies are more equipped to better eliminate toxins. Peroxide can help destroy toxins, organisms & even pulls out the residue left by soaps & other (toxic) body products. It’s also antibacterial and antiviral.

If you feel lightheaded time to get out of the bath and rinse off with a lukewarm or cool shower.

Drink your water and add some lemon vitality. Water seems like a no-brainer but we often need a reminder to keep sipping through the day to stay hydrated and keep flushing our systems.

Adding lemon or another citrus vitality essential oil to your water can help support your lymphatic system which clears away toxins and waste and is part of your immune system.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Sounds fancy, but basically–it’s exercise! A quick search will yield lots of articles and videos on specifics for this, but exercise–both aerobic and anaerobic–aid in conditioning your diaphragm and making your lungs more efficient.

This seems like common sense but exercise in clean air–not where it’s smoky.

Herbal teas that can offer support are slippery elm, marshmallow root, licorice root, peppermint, or lobelia. Chamomile also makes a soothing tea to drink and an eyewash for irritated eyes.

Mushrooms turkey tail and ashwagandha are also great for supporting your immune system.

Take care of your liver. Those particles that you inhale and are small enough to pass through your lungs and into your bloodstream will be filtered by your liver. Eating fresh, whole foods–particularly those that are not inflammatory–provides your body with the tools it needs to eliminate toxins and regenerating itself. Foods like garlic, onions, and broccoli help increase enzyme activity–refined sugars can lower it.

Essential oils that can help support the liver are JuvaFlex Vitality, JuvaCleanse Vitality, GLF (gallbladder/liver function) Vitality, Orange Vitality, Ledum Vitality, Celery Seed Vitality, Lemon Vitality, Carrot Seed Vitality, and Cardamom Vitality. These can be taken in a vegetable capsule or drank in water–I love lemon in my water or you can put it in hot water with lemon to make a tea.

Supplements that are fantastic at supporting a healthy liver are JuvaTone Tablets, JuvaPower, Longetivity Softgels, and Sulfurzyme.

These are some foundational ways to help support your body on ANY day, but especially during prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke. Your body is constantly regenerating itself–it’s important to provide it with the best building blocks to do so.

Staying Well This Winter

I can’t take it y’all. Seeing so many people go down for the count this winter! It is brutal out there, but thankfully we’ve got this beautiful thing called the immune system that can help defend us from all the yuck!

I’ve spent the last 10 years on a journey trying to figure out my personal health, and find the healthiest ways to live for my family and I…and I thought I’d share a few of the main things with you over on my public Cultivating Abundant Life Facebook page.
